In 2000, the Federation Equestre International (FEI) accepted reining for international competition, and reining was approved as the first western discipline to be inducted into the World Equestrian Games in 2002."

The Million Dollar Invitational held on August 17 in Las Vegas, Nevada was limited to twelve riders who were selected based on their successes in the reining horse industry. Nine of these riders are NRHA Million Dollar Riders, and three were chosen as WILD CARD Riders due to their unique stories. These riders were invited to participate in this one go-round, all out competition for $1,000,000, with the Champion receiving $500,000.
Because of a contract with Paramount Network, the event was not available for livestream in the U.S. or Canada adding to the suspense of the series following 8 of the riders.
